What is a triathlon event?

A triathlon is a multi sports event that comprises of the following:

1-      Swimming

2-      Biking

3-      Running

Participants have to compete against each other over given distances individually for swimming, biking and running. The one with the fastest overall completion time is the winner.

Distance standards for triathlon events can be divided into four type:

·         Sprint or Short distance

·         Standard or Intermediate distance

·         Long or half ironman distance

·         Ultra or full ironman distance

The sprint or short distance consists of 750 m swimming, 20 km biking and 5 km running.

The standard or intermediate distance is also referred to as Olympic distance and it consists of 1.5 km swimming, 40 km biking and 10 km running.

The long distance is also termed as half ironman distance standard and consists of 1.9 km swimming, 90 km biking and 21.1 km running.

And the longest distance standard is the ultra distance also known as full ironman distance. It consists of 3.8 km swimming, 180 km biking and 42.2 km running.

These are the distance standards recognized by International Triathlon Union and USA triathlon.

To make up for a practice session for triathlon event, you are required to have certain gear. The swimming and running part are least affected by the gear used but biking is directly affected by the type and quality of bike you use.
